I’m a technique junkie… everybody knows it! Actually, I rarely purchase ready-made embellishments. Templates however, THAT’s something I can sink my teeth into! Agreed, it’s more work, but as I constantly repeat in my classes and demos, scrapbooking is a HOBBY, meant to RELAX, why in the world would anyone want to do it fast?
Therefore, I will be back here periodically to explain various templates and stencils to create all sorts of elements and effects for all your scrapbooking and card-making projects. What I like about templates in particular is their virtually unlimited potential for the price – truly a VERY wise investment!
Let’s begin with the Snowflakes & Stars template from Hot Off the Press. Here it is at first glance:
Designed by Susan Niner Janes, it will allow you to create 8 different snowflakes and stars to use on your album pages, cards, and more. All you need to do is trace the pattern, cut and fold it according to the instructions printed directly onto the template. The template is made of flexible and translucent plastic and is 3-hole-punched for easy storage in a ring album or binder.
Group snowflakes by 3 or 4 for fabulous accents on a winter page, create borders or use as a focal on a card. For a light and floating effect, use vellum.
NOTE : Never use an « exacto » knife directly on the template, this would damage the plastic. Rather trace first and cut afterwards.

Not only are the instructions written on the template, but there are also drawings of the finished items right beside the corresponding pattern as well as some design tips.
Now, here is a look at the finished snowflakes and stars :
Each snowflake and star can be used individually or grouped, or even layered for an even more spectacular look. They can also be embellished with various products and mediums.
I attached the center using a small brad and added some Liquid Applique and immediately heated to puff it.
I attached a brad in the center of this one as well, but it’s shaped as a snowflake. I then added Icicle Stickles to the branches.
For this star, I simply added Waterfall Stickles to the edges.
I edged this one with Silver Smooch ink…
… and this one with blue Smooch ink.
I chose to glue a white Dew Drop to the center of this one using Glossy Accents – you need to hold it in place a few second to make sure it stays put – and added Stickles all over. Once dry, I added more Dew Drops to the tips, again using Glossy Accents.
I inserted a blue metallic brad in the middle of this star, and edged with blue Stickles.
Finally, I simply edged this one using a metallic marker.
